The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras is launching a summer program in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for rural school students. This outreach program will take place from June 20 to 25, 2022.
Varsity aims to reach at least one lakh of students from government schools across the country. Keeping in mind the changing environment of the education industry due to the coronavirus pandemic, this program will take place in an online setting. It will be taught in English and Tamil.
As of now, 100 students have been selected to start this program. IIT Madras aims to teach and motivate students to advance their interest in scientific and technological advances. “The Department has given importance to students from disadvantaged blocks when selecting students for this program. These 100 students are just the beginning and many more students will be brought in. This program has 70% practical component and the rest is theory”, Thiru. Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said.
The 100 students in Grade 10 were selected by the Department of School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. Department officials identify and reach students from underprivileged backgrounds and then submit a list to IIT-Madras. The university then contacts these students and arranges for transport, accommodation, etc. Students will spend a week on campus, where they will be greeted with an electronic kit.
Various topics will be taught such as Environmental and Electronic Aspects in Engineering, Technological Growth in Renewable Energies and Applied Mathematics, among others.
