Gracie Eve Duncan Smith – The News Reporter

Gracie Eve Duncan Smith, 91, went to be with her beloved Savior Friday, June 17, 2022. She was born December 25, 1930, in Old Dock, as the second of three children to Seth Adam Duncan and Eppie Dell Etheridge. Duncan. Her death was preceded by that of her parents; her husband Kenneth (Bill) Elwood Smith Sr.; his two brothers, Jesse Edward Duncan and Jack Adam Duncan; and on February 1, 2022, by his beloved sister-in-law Julia Ann Smith of Clarkton.
Gracie has spent much of her life as a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. In the early 1970s, she went back to school to get her GED, one of the proudest moments in her life. She then went on to work with the Columbus County School System and retired at age 26 as manager of the former Hallsboro School cafeterias, where she put her “special touch” on the meals that were served to “her children”.
Gracie loved to sew, knit and crochet and there are no grandchildren or great-grandchildren, and few friends who don’t have one of her blankets, baby blankets, scarves, slides, toboggans, or dish towels now even more precious. She would crochet until her hands hurt and then she would take her Bible and read and read and read.
She could whip up a meal out of thin air in just a few minutes for anyone who walked through her door. She was well known for her barbecue ribs, homemade cookies, strawberry fig jam, turkey sauce, and banana bread. She loved to sing in the choir at her beloved Mt. Zion in Clarkton, where she was the oldest member. God has a new angel and a new member of his heavenly choir where she will surely sing loudly forever. Her family knows that she is now safe and very happy to be with her Heavenly Father and all the family members who have gone before her. She said more than once that she was grateful for each day He gave her and that she would try to do something good for someone each of those days. Be happy, joyful and grateful if you met her and sad if you missed this wonderful opportunity.
His funeral will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, June 22 at Mt. Zion (Clarkton) with Rev. Coy Long officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm to 2:45 pm before the church service. Burial will immediately follow at Williamsons Crossroads Baptist Church Cemetery (Chadbourn), where she will be buried next to her husband. McKenzie Funeral Home is serving the family.
She is survived by her eight children, Kenneth E. Smith II and wife, Linda, of Creston, Rebecca S. Bright of Whitsett, Phillip Alan Smith and wife, Yvonne, Christopher Matthew Smith and wife, Billie, and Melinda S. Ward and husband, Robert, all of Whiteville, Seth Dean Smith and wife, Polly, of Gatesville, Texas, Joanna S. Floyd and Lisa S. Brown and husband Shawn, both of Chadbourn. She also leaves 18 grandchildren; more than 23 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. She also leaves to cherish her memory Josh, her constant furry companion.
Flowers are welcome, but donations can be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church (9512 Red Hill Rd., Clarkton, NC 28433) or Williamsons Crossroads Baptist Church Cemetery Fund (4071 Princess Ann Rd., Chadbourn, NC 28431).
