He lives on a Black Angus cattle ranch that is managed by his parents, James William Davis and Anna Catherine Davis. He also grew up with his brother and 25 pet cats.

After graduating from Ball State University in 1967, Jim worked for a local advertising agency for two years. According to Garfield.com, he later became an assistant to cartoonist Tom Ryan, creator of the Tumbleweeds comic from 1969 to 1978. From Tom Ryan, Jim learned skills and discipline. Those are two things if you want to be a comic book artist.
