Finding a quarterback like Aaron Rodgers is very difficult these days, but former Packers wide receiver James Jones believes the 49ers may have actually found this guy.
During a recent edition of NFL Network’s Total Access, Jones praised Trey Lance’s potential as the 49ers’ starting quarterback.
“I think we’re looking at a genuine superstar like Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers,” Jones said. “We had a small taste of Aaron Rodgers, but all you could hear from the locker room and from the people around Aaron was, ‘Wait. You wait and see. It was the same thing for Patrick Mahomes, and it’s the same thing we’re hearing about Trey Lance.”
Former first-round pick Brandon Aiyuk also has no doubts about the young QB’s ability to lead the team, going so far as to call Lance “special”.
“I’ve seen a lot of him, especially since we started this offseason show, how much he’s grown, just watching him play football, lead the locker room, connect with the guys. Yes, we have a special quarterback.”
Selected third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft after San Francisco landed a wildly successful pre-draft trade, it always seemed to be a foregone conclusion that Lance would take over the second year.
When on the field in 2021, he played very well in limited action.
As a rookie last year, Lance threw for 603 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for 168 yards and another score.
