for ‘Neighbors From Afar’

Educational program for students to promote global mindset

 

The Seoul Metropolitan Government is inviting foreign instructors who would like to introduce their own culture to preschoolers and students in elementary, middle and high schools in Seoul.

 

Application Deadline: Jan. 31 (Tuesday), 2012

Seat Availability: 26 people

Qualification: Foreigners or naturalized Korean citizens who meet all of the following requirements

 

  • Individuals who can speak English or Korean
  • Individuals who are available 2-3 times each month during the 5 months period
  • Individuals who have passion to introduce one’s own culture to Korean students

 

²  Priority will be given to those whose have fluent Korean proficiency.

 

Documents to submit: application form, self-introduction letter and a lesson plan (in English or Korean) and a copy of the following documents as proof of identity/eligibility (ID card, proof of school enrollment, proof of your career experience, official Korean language or English test scores)

 

How to apply: by post or e-mail or submit the documents directly to the Seoul Metropolitan Government (Mail-in applications will only be accepted if received before the due date.)

   <Program Outline>

 

l  Place: at a classroom of kindergartens, elementary, middle and high schools in Seoul

l  Period: 2-3 classes per month from March to July, 2012

l  Honorarium per class:

-less than one hour of class time: 50,000KRW

-more than one hour and less than two hours of class time: 80,000KRW

-more than 2 hours of class time: 130,000KRW

The WHYs and HOWs of Korean Ways

Our fifth lecture will cover everything about Korean culture in work places. While working with Koreans, you must have faced various occasions which revealed some cultural differences, such as complete silence at a meeting but more and better the way people bond through Hoe-sik (team building dining after work). Join us in listening to Isabelle’s cultural observations and get her perspectives to your burning questions.

 

About the Speaker:

“Cultural Interpreter” Isabelle Min is a cross culture specialist and professor of Consumption Culture at SungKyunKwan University. Through the six lectures Isabelle will share her perspectives on the way Korean culture is displayed in areas such as  shopping, dining, riding transportation, socializing and working.

2011 Career Fair for Overseas Students

2011 Career Fair for Overseas Students will be held for international students who are seeking  employment in Korea on Oct. 6 – 7 at Coex in Gangnam. More than 40 Korean companines will take part in the event, including Samsung Engineering, Hyosung, Daewoong, SK C&C, POSCO E&C, Hanwha Finance Network, Lotte, Daelim, and LS Industrial Systems.

The Seoul Global Culture & Tourism Center, established and operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Tourism Organization, is presenting a special lecture series for international citizens in Seoul.

A total of 6 lectures are planned to be present until the end of 2011, each session will be on a different subject related to a Korean lifestyle, including shopping, dining, family & home, transportation, working and socializing.

Customized Living Orientation

 

Seoul Global Center, a help center for foreigners run by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, provides a Customized Living Orientation to international residents who have resided in Korea for less than a year.

This orientation provides basic living information, aiming to help people adjust to their lives in Seoul faster and easier. This program first started in 2008 for native English teachers of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education and has been extended to serve native teachers in private institutes, international students, international spouses, Specially Designated Activities (E-7) visa holders, Family Dependency (F-3) visa holders, and other groups.

The orientation includes information and programs to meet the needs and interests of various groups and uses the most effective presentation methods. The orientation is offered whenever a group of more than 10 international residents makes a request.

• Introduction of the Seoul Global Center

• Information on Daily living: Public transportation, Housing, Cell phones, Internet Service, Exchanging Driver’s license, Paying utility bills, Garbage disposal, Leisure, and more
