Korean Modern Literature Class

The Seorae Global Village Center is offering a special class on Korean modern literature as follows:

  • Subject: 20th Century Korean Literature (translated into English)
  • Instructor: Shim Ah-jin, a Korean writer
  • Date & Time: Feb. 3 (Fri) from 1
  • Fees: Free of charge

Participants can better understand the Korean psyche by learning about 20th century Korean literature through three short novels that are translated into English and French: “Spring Spring” by Kim Yu-jeong, “The Rainy Spell” by Yun Heung-gil, and “Sword” by Lee Seung-woo.

 ‘Seoul Family’s Home Invitation Program for Expats’

 

We are inviting both expats and the locals in Korea to an occasion where they can have an opportunity to better understand each other by sharing cultures and traditions as well as having dinner at a local Korean family’s home.

  • Numbers to be selected : 1~2 invitees (individual or team)

2011 Hanseong Baekje Cultural Festival

Marking its 11th anniversary this year, Songpa-gu in Seoul has been hosting the Hanseong Baekje Cultural Festival since 1994 with an aim to promote the glorious history of Hanseong Baekje.

As a representative event of Songpa-gu, the festival was recognized as the Culture and Tourism Festival by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2008.

This year’s festival will feature a wide range of events including Dongmyeongje (a ritual ceremony for the tomb of King Dongmyeong), folklore performances, a street parade, and Baekje theme zone. In addition, you will be able to experience various hands-on programs such as trying out traditional costumes, military training, excavating relics, and making pottery.

Coming of Age Ceremony

 

The Gangnam District Office is organizing an event for ‘coming of age’ that celebrates the day of becoming an adult. The ‘coming of age’ day is celebrated in different ways around the world, and it falls on Monday of the third week of May in Korea. Turning 19 years old (or 20 at the most) means the beginning of the transition into adulthood, and you will be granted the full rights of an adult, such as the right to vote.

If you are between the ages of 19 and 24, join our ‘coming of age’ ceremony which will be held on May 7th. You will be able to try traditional Korean costumes and experience the ceremony as celebrated in the traditional way.

In collaboration with the Korean Spirit & Culture Promotion Project, the Yeoksam Global Village Center is organizing an event where you can experience the Korean spirit and culture.

Participants will watch DVDs about Korea’s cultural artifacts & modern Korea and learn about Korean customs and etiquettes. In addition, participants will be given an opportunity to experience Korea’s traditions such as sabae, New Year’s tradition of bowing to the elders in hanbok (Korean traditional clothes). You will be provided with a Korean traditional dessert as well.

It will be a good chance to experience Korea.

Hands-on Program For Native speaker Teachers

“Experiencing Royal Culture”

The National Palace Museum of Korea’s Education program called ‘Experiencing Royal culture’ is designed to help native speaker teachers learn about Joseon Royal culture along with Koreans.

The program will offer you a range of hands-on activities through five session lectures including a field trip.

Date and hour / Total of five sessions

   – session 1, 3~5 : 18:00~20:00, the 1st~4th Tuesday of June, October, November, December.

   – session   2  : 14:00~16:00, the 2th Saturday of June, October, November, December.

Place : Lecture Room of National Palace Museum and Changdeokgung

             (Lecture Room is located on B1 of the National Palace museum)

Class size : 20 People (10 native speaker teachers and 10 Koreans)

Qualifications

    Foreigners : native English teachers of elementary, middle and high school

    Koreans     : adults who are fluent in English and interested in Joseon Royal culture

Making a wooden case of Korean National Flag

Korean Independence day aka Gwangbokjeol (August 15), is one of Korea’s Public holidays.  It commemorates South Korea’s victory over Japan; the day Korea was liberated from Japanese rule.

To celebrate Gwangbokjeol, the Yeoksam Global Village Center is organizing an event where participants can make wooden cases bearing the Korean National Flag. The activity will include a brief introduction of Korean Flag, its usage, painting a Korean flag on a wooden case and assembling a wooden case set.  A Korean National Flag will also be given to the participants to keep.
