How friendly are local banks for providing services for foreigner residents?

The research was done by the SGC, Feb 11~12, 2010 among 10 major banks:  City Bank, IBK (기엽), Hana Bank, HSBC, KEB, KB (국민), Nonghyup (농협), SC First Bank, Shinhan Bank, Woori Bank

1. Of these ten banks, six have English direct phone services:  KEB, Woori, KB, Nonghyup, HSBC, and IBK.

  • KEB: 1544-3000 (09)
  • Woori: 080 – 365 – 5000 (7)
  • KB: 1644-9999 (90)
  • Nonghyup: 1588-2100 (730)
  • HSBC: 1588-1770 (9)

Basic Banking Service information

By Heekyoung Han. Posted in Banking, Living in Seoul | No Comments »

1. Business hours of local banks

-      Monday-Friday 9am-4pm (As of 2009 April)

-      ATM 24/7 : Side offices at any banks (some offices are opened until 10pm or some are 24hrs) or convenience stores

2. How do I open a local bank account?

-      To open a bank account, required documents are an alien registration card and a passport

3.  Can I get a debit card that I can use in abroad?

-      This is one of the most frequently asked questions involving banking services received by Korea Exchange Bank (KEB) desk at the Seoul Global Center.  The SGC along with the Ministry of Economy and Finance worked on finding a solution to this problem. Effective July 20, 2008, foreigners can be issued a debit card which can be used abroad.  Not all banks provide this service, however the KEB at the SGC can help you with this.  With a debit card, you may make payments including purchases of goods within the balance of your account and withdraw cash in Korea. Outside of Korea, you also may take out cash from global ATMs.
